Sleep Number Bed - Poor quality and service

5/21/2007 - Nancy of Missouri, USA writes:

Watch out for the sleep number beds. We purchased our $4,000 9000 series bed three years ago this month. We have been complaining that it doesn't seem to hold air for very long. Select Comfort support kept telling us that was normal and air would adjust based on room temp. Well now one chamber will not hold air at all and we have been told that the problem is with the pump. Of course after the second year the customer has to pay a prorated portion of the part being replaced plus the shipping for the new part and the return shipping of the old part. They have found another way to get even more money from their customers...their support people can't count years as we are being charged for five years prorated when it should only be for three years. I highly recommend choosing another bed!

Best Bed Ever!

4/28/2007 - Laura of California, USA writes:

I bought this bed 7 years ago. I have fibromyalgia and have had troubled sleeping for years. Pain greeted me each morning. I never felt rested or restored. With my Sleep Number bed, that is history - unless I travel. When I stay in other beds, I go back to all the same problems. It has become torture to travel knowing that I cannot take my bed with me. My husband, who is a normal, healthy guy, also loves the bed. He does not want to leave it in the morning! To date, over a dozen friends have purchased the bed as well, and all love it just like we do. The only negative - condensation between the airchambers and the padding can lead to mold. Air out at least once a month. I also had one air chamber leak and not hold its "number" about a year ago. They replaced and it has been great since.

Good, but with problems

4/14/2007 - Don of California, USA writes:

I purchased a queen size one to replace a motionless waterbed. It goes together easily and gives tremendous support, but no more or less than a regular spring bed. While it's true that you can have two different levels of firmness, what they don't tell you is that there is a piece of foam that goes between the air bags. This can be felt as if it were an iron bar when you roll over the middle. It you never do so there should be no problem. I sold mine after 5 years when I moved and purchased a competing version that does not have the form rail down the center.

Own it, its great

4/2/2007 - John of Wisconsin, USA writes:

Great bed, can sleep better at night with different firmness than the wife. Same cost as a regular (good quality) King mattress and guaranteed for 20 years. Must check the sleep number weekly to make sure that any power outages/surges didnt change the number.

Select Comfort 7000

3/4/2007 - Anonymous of Massachusetts, USA writes:

Do not buy this bed! I had problams from the first day. The sleep # does not stay on set, body heat expands the air pressure, you wake up in pain. Company can not help. Return it cost me $700. Worth it!

Not for me

3/2/2007 - Laura of Arizona, USA writes:

I stayed at a hotel that has the sleep number beds, horrible for me, couldn't get the proper air no matter what I did. I've had three low back surgeries and this bed was my worst nightmare. Kept my family up every night trying to adjust bed. Try before you buy!

It works!

2/10/2007 - Andrea of Georgia, USA writes:

My back was so back pain was so bad I thought surgery was inevitable. I was very skeptical about this bed but thought I'd give a try. I can't believe it but 2 weeks later the pain just stopped.

A great investment for us!

1/30/2007 - Kristy of Indiana, USA writes:

We bought our Sleep Number bed after laying on a million different mattressess at several stores. I prefer a softer mattress, and my husband prefers a more firm mattress. This bed offers us both at the same time! We both sleep great and our daughter is begging for her own sleep number bed now. This bed may not be for everyone, but it is most definately worth a try!

Can't Sleep Away From Home!

12/18/2006 - Michele of Virginia, USA writes:

My Husband and I find it difficult to sleep away from home now, and always look forward to our Sleep Number bed after a trip. We purchased a waterbed frame with drawers underneath, and therefore gained storage space as well as a great indentation for the mattress. We have added a viscoelastic pad in the last couple of years, which only added to the comfort. Our only complaint would be that over time the chambers and coverings seem to develop a "memory", sagging towards the center of the bed a bit. We occasionally fill them up and then reduce back to our sleep numbers to help shift the coverings back to normal. Over the years, weight loss or gain necessitate changing the number ;) A few years ago, we were treated very well when one of the chambers leaked air. They sent another straight away. When the time comes, we will definitely buy another!

alright

8/7/2006 - David of New York, USA writes:

i have the sleepnumber 3000 twin bed. it was easy to set up. the advertised "Whisper Quiet Comfort Control System" is very loud. if i try to get a setting that is soft enough, my middle hits the boxspring. the bed also slides off the bed if the bed is lifted up 4 inches at the head to prevent heartburn. after a firm innerspring matress, this was a treat.

Amazing Relief Overnight!!

3/28/2006 - Rebecca of Texas, USA writes:

This bed was just what I needed. After getting married I started having sleepless nights. My husband is heavier and I always felt like I was falling toward his side. The pillowtop mattress we were on was only 2 years old, yet I started waking up with backaches every morning. Also he likes a firmer mattress than I do. Neither one of us was sleeping well. We tried a queensize pillowtop Sleep Number bed and fell in love with it overnight. Literally! We could each sleep at our own firmness level and I no longer rolled to his side. For the first time since getting married, I slept through the night and woke up with NO back pain. We had a friendly sales person (no pressure) who showed us exactly how to find our sleep number. Now that I am pregnant, I have loved being able to adjust my number to make sleeping more comfortable.

Not For Us

3/21/2006 - Carol of Arizona, USA writes:

We purchased a king size, soft top Sleep Number bed a year ago and thank goodness we were able to return it to the dealership at no charge! We could never get a "right" number for our comfort. It was either too soft or too hard...always had a back ache. Because of the separate chambers for each side, a hill was created between us that seemed like a mountain when we wanted to snuggle. The mattress showed two sags like hammocks side by side in it all day when the bed was made, even though we filled it up all the way with air. Just looked sloppy! This might work for a single sleeper/one chamber who is used to a waterbed but it definitely didn't work for us.

It works for us

3/7/2006 - Mike of California, USA writes:

After shopping for a new mattress for several months, we settled on one of the "Sleep Number" type mattresses. They're essentially high quality air mattresses inside a high density foam frame. My wife and I both suffer from injury induced back pain, and we can both get a comfortable night's sleep on these mattresses. She was able to find the right setting faster than I did. Some people may have to try several settings before finding one that works. We tried several models of viscoelastic (tempurepedic) type mattresses as well before settling on this. It was impossible to find one with a density that worked for both of us.

Sleepless Nights

2/4/2006 - Gordon of Montana, USA writes:

We purchased the king with pillow top from a local store. n They told me it was a free in home trial. I could not sleep on the bed. I wok up with extreme back pain. I tried to adjust several nights according to the phone help. Decided the bed was not from me. I packed up the bed and took it back to the store. They refused to take it. Told me I had to ship it back to the factory on my own dime. And if I did it on my own I would be liable for damage. It cost me $150.00 to ship back. So MUCH FOR A FREE in home trial. The sleep number people were redicoulous to deal with. Even if I liked the product I was lied to and I charge too much for a free trial.

Not for Tall People

1/6/2006 - Jan of Arizona, USA writes:

We purchsed a Cal King and were so disappionted we had to immediately send it back with US having to pay the over $100 return shipping! I am 5'9" and my husband is 6'6". There was NO WAY for either of us to stay within the air bag space. So, unless your setting is exactly the same pressure as the foam frame, you have high & low spots every time you turn over! Might be fine for short people!

Good Bed

1/5/2006 - Kerry of Arizona, USA writes:

I only gave this item 4 stars because I'm not sure this bed is for everyone, but we sure like it. We have had it for about 7 years now and it still works as well today as it was when it was new. Our only complaint initially was that it took them three tries to get the right size to us. But for comfort and reliability, this bed is great, and a good transition from changing from a water bed, which is what we did. We didn't even have to change our expensive water bed frame--the mattress fit right inside it. If we had it to do all over again, we would definitely buy it.

Select Comfort

12/17/2005 - Anonymous of California, USA writes:

My husband and I purchased a Select Comfort bed over 10 years ago (I believe the name has been changed now to Sleep Number). We still have it and still love it. It is the most comfortable bed we've ever owned. When I go to bed, especially after an exhausting day, it feels SO wonderful to get into our Select Comfort/Sleep Number bed. I highly recommend this bed. The Select Comfort pillow was not the greatest, though.

This Bed is Terrible!

11/23/2005 - Danielle of New York, USA writes:

I just came back from Aruba where we stayed at a worldwide hotel chain who has recently replaced all beds in their hotels with the sleep by number bed. Since I have been suffering from back problems (herniated discs) for years, I was looking forward to trying this bed and possibly buying one when we returned home. We spent 2 weeks at the hotel. By the 4th night, my back went out on me and I continued to have pain for the duration of my vacation. I felt that I could not get comfortable in this bed no matter what number I used. If I set the bed to a lower (softer) setting, I felt that my back had no support. If I set the bed to a higher (firmer) setting, I felt that I had too much pressure. I just couldn't seem to get it right and I couldn't wait to get home and back into my own bed! My husband does not have any back problems and was complaining about his back as well. We also met another man staying at the hotel who claims the bed caused him to get a stiff neck! I don't know if the beds at the hotel would be different than the ones that are purchased for home use, but I do know that I will never purchase one of these beds and I will definately not go back to that hotel simply for that reason. The only advantage I can see to owning this bed is that 2 people sleeping together can have their own "firmness" level. Other than that I don't think this bed is a wise buy...I'm glad I tested it out before buying one.

AWESOME BED!

9/29/2005 - P. Vance of Florida, USA writes:

My husband and I purchased this bed 1 month ago.  We hated this bed until we finally figured out what our sleep numbers were. It's suggested that you sleep on this bed at one number for 3 nights before changing your sleep number. We bought the Sleep Comfort Queen Dual Chamber/Wireless Remote. This bed is Pricey, however, I would still recommend the purchase.  I finally have NO BACKACHE when I wake up in the morning and the ajustable feature for the firmness of the mattress is awesome!

Back Relief at Last

9/11/2005 - Ellis of Missouri, USA writes:

I bought the Sleep Number Bed (5000 Series King) about 3 months ago and am very happy with it. I've owned Serta, Sealy, cheap air beds, foam pads and slept in many other beds through all my travels. My back always ached after sleeping in all the previous beds. I am a thin person with a little more than average curve to my back. I am a sleep number 30. This is soft enough to conform to my back and give it is just right support and yet still feels a little firm because it conforms to my body so well. I prefer to sleep on my back and in this position, the bed is great. However, due to something I need to get checked out, I always end up sleeping on my side then stomach. The bed is still great on the side, but on the stomach, I need to change the firmness. My wife is a different number and we both have our own side, so this is a big plus. I love the king as it is so much roomier over our previous queens. Putting it together took about an 1-1.5 hours and I was able to do it myself without much issues. Once the bed is put together, it looks like any other bed. The materials are very nice and feel like it would last a long time. I have jumped onto the bed, played with my baby on it, and even stood and walked on it without any problems. It is durable so far. We did end up buying the bed pedestals (two twins for the king). They are black plastic and look cheap, but they are industrial strength and could take a lot of abuse. They form a platform rather than rails with middle beams. In fact, we had it on the floor for two weeks while waiting for a missing platform box for one of the twins. Really, you could buy or make anything flat surfaced to put the bed on. No box spring needed. The one drawback I have experienced so far is that the air pressure control doesn't always seem consistent. When I change the number, it appears as if it doesn't add or take away the air the same if I change the number up or down and return to my number 30. Maybe it's due to air pressure, don't know. It's very minor as I still wake up without back pains. I got the wireless control. You can change the number in multiples of 5 only. That means there are 20 available firmness choices and not 100 as you may be inclined to think. Once again, this hasn't been a big issue. I rarely change the number anyway. The bed is very pricey, but not any more than other top of the line models. The 7000 series offers memory foam and the air chamber, but when I tested it in the store, I preffered the 5000 series and it was cheaper. I am very happy that I don't wake up so achy any more. Certain times, I do feel a tad ache if the wife forces me into some funky position. Once in a while I get restless, but I think that has more to do with my pillow not being as conforming as my bed. I'd love to hear of any pillow recommendations. I like soft and conforming with great neck support. Best bed I've ever owned by far. It is worth the premium price in my opinion.
