In July of 2007 my husband and I purchased a sleep number bed. It is absolutely horrible!!!! My husband has contacted the company via email, and was told that we need to completely fill up the bed, then slowly let air out until we get to where we are comfortable. Of course, that is what we had done when we first got the bed, but we decided to humour it and try again. It is no better. The mattress is always lopsided, so that if we don't sleep almost perfectly straight on our respective edges of the bed, we sink into the middle of the bed, and then our hips are basically on a hard surface, causing intense pain. If we do sleep perfectly straight on our respective edges, we wake up with sore muscles due to straining NOT to sink into the middle of the bed. And don't even try to tell me that we need to put MORE air into it, because then we feel like we are actually sleeping on barrels...who in their right mind thought that it would be a good idea to design a bed that, when filled with air, makes the user think "this must be what it feels like to sleep on a large, pregnant cheese wedge?" What's worse is that in order to have shipped it back within the 30-day trial, it would cost us $400.00!!! If the salesman at the store had informed us of that, there's no way we would have purchased the bed!! And we can't even sell the d*$% thing in good conscience, since we, unlike that company, are not comfortable with scamming innocent people out of their money when they are just trying to be able to get a good night's sleep. I fully intend to post a copy of this email on all of my blog sites and also with the BBB, the Consumer Protection Agency, any place online that I can find to post of review of these atrocious beds, and I will also send emails to the national radio station (WOWFM) that advertises these beds, that is, unless they can rectify this situation. Maybe the suits up in the boardrooms think it's okay to charge people $1000 for garbage, but I certainly don't, and neither do most people who have some slight contact with reality. I really wish I didn't have to give this at least one star due to the setup up this site.

We had a Sealy Posturpedic Riverwood pillowtop that we paid $1600 for 5 years ago. As with any mattress, no matter how good, it packs down in certain areas, mainly where your butt is, and I'm only 130 lbs., but it does get annoying going to sleep every night and having to deal with the "dip", especially when you try to sleep on your stomach and your back arches painfully. We decided on the Sleep Number bed. Only got the 3000 model ($599) as opposed to the 4000 model for $1000 more. We bought a thick Egyptian cotton pad for it and gave it a try. While it's not as plush as the Sealy, you can set it to your comfort level. I like mine soft (my setting is about 30). It eliminated the pressure points on my hips and shoulders. I used to wake up with pain in both because of the old mattress. The Sleep Number eliminated those and I've been sleeping much better. We put the SN on our old boxspring because the boxspring they were selling was too cheap and expensive. Overall, I like it and have slept better. Not to mention the fact that over time, a normal mattress accumulates a significant amount of dust mites and skin flakes (gross but true). With the SN, you can remove the mattress covering and wash it, can't do that with a regular mattress. I've definitely slept better with this bed, but I miss the height and plushness of a regular mattress.

We purchased a king size - 7000 model. We are very happy with the bed. We went to the store and tried them out first, and found that the less expensive models were definately less comfortable. Pro's: - Very comfortable - We sleep better, with less back pain. It takes a few weeks to find your "sleep number". but once you find it - .....aaaah !!! - Two controlls: You and your spouse can both have your desired firmness. - Two chambers: Movement is not transfered from side-to-side. Lets your partner sleep better. - Easy to assemble and move: Bed breaks down and was easy to move into a third story bedroom with a winding staircase. (std king bed would not have fit) Con's - Yes they are expensive!

I'd heard about these for a long time and had always assumed they must be great. I got pretty confused with all the options of standard spring and foam mattresses, and thought it would be simpler and probably better, and probably cheaper than the pricey mattresses I was seeing out there. I went to try one out [], and came away very unimpressed. The prices were so much higher than I expected, and when I lay on the bed it felt like a joke, just a cheap air mattress feel. Worse, when I sat up, lay down, or moved around the whole bed just felt like a bubble shifting around below me. Although they can put on a lot of padding on top I was checking these out as an alternative to springs and pillow tops or foam. More surprises... you have to leave the pump in an on state all the time, so if the power goes out for a few hours I'm not sure what you will do. The construction seemed cheap, not only the air mattress but also the foam sides with velcro stuff. When I heard about all the shipping details I just lost interest. I was actually very disappointed, like a big let down. I'd been in need of a new mattress for years and was finally ready once and for all to invest in a good one that can last me for the next 10-15 years, but I couldn't believe what this "technology" actually was and how incredibly expensive it was. I would think that this would only be worth it as a way to emulate a traditional bed with a cheaper technology at a much lower price, but they seem to charge nearly the same amount as a "real" mattress. I was shocked

This bed is really bad. My wife and I wake up in pain every day. We have adjusted the numbers many times and to no avial. Yesterday, I was soar all day from back pain. We wake up several times a night to try and get comfortable; which breaks out sleep. We both are in the medical field and know the importants of sleep and the Sleep Number is not it.

I purchased a queen sized 5000 model in August of 2006. So far, I have no complaints! My boyfriend at the time had horrible back pain, that would wake him up nearly every night and he would end up sleeping on one of our couches for more support. We tried switching out my old queen sized innersping mattress, for his mattress, with no luck. We happened to be in the mall one night for dinner and had a wait before we could be seated, so we began walking around. We came upon a Select Comfort store, and figured we had nothing better to do, so stopped in to talk. After MUCH questioning from us (we were both recent college grads, and had little cash), we ended up purchasing the bed on a 12 month no payment/no interest plan. The bed arrived in a timely fashion (a few days early even I believe), and we got it set up in about 2 hours. The very first night, he was able to sleep straight through the night!! We continued the trial, and decided that it was well worth the money if he could again sleep. I have since moved, and debated on how to handle moving the bed. Once you put it together, it's quite easy to do it again, so I tore the hole thing down (including the foundation) and fit it all into my Chevy Cavalier (do THAT with an innersping mattress). I got to my new place, had it set up in 45 minutes. While the bed is very high priced, I think it is well worth the money. I have not had any problems with air leaks, or the mattress material wearing through, and the foundation seems to be just as solid as the day we put it together the first time. I did get the wired option with two remotes, so I can't speak to the wireless. It's been well over a year and I still love it. Looking forward to many more years of great sleep!

I love the Select Comfort Bed. I am a side sleeper who is also a light sleeper. I find myself more refreshed, rested, and awake during the day after sleeping on my Select Comfort Bed. The thing about it is that all along when I used to sleep on an inner spring mattress I thought I preferred a firm mattress, I found out after testing different settings that I sleep better on a softer setting. I sleep at around 35-45. Pros: Comfortable. Adjustable to your needs. When my wife was pregnant she could adjust the bed weekly or daily to her body's needs. Cons: A little pricy, and it takes a few weeks to find the perfect number for your body.

I do not mean to sound bitter, but after 3 years of owning two California King 7000 beds Sleep Number beds, I feel compelled to voice my opinion for other buyers, since my purchases were based on customer reviews. First, in both beds, within two years, I have had to warranty replace both pillow tops and foam. The first request and replacement was rather simple and went well, as I would expect when you spend nearly $4000 on a bed. A bed, which I might add, I bought because, and this is a quote from Select Comfort; “this is the last bed you will ever purchase”. With that in mind, it is easier to spend so much on a bed. The sales Select Comfort sales representative in [] said the bed would last twenty years. This is a lie, by the way. What I did not expect, was the lack of quality, and the monopolistic arm-behind-the-back tactics Select Comfort has in their arsenal when help is needed. The second time I needed a pillow-top replacement was the same as the first; the pillow-top was falling apart at the feet and holes were appearing. Since it had been more than two years, they wanted to charge me for the replacement. They were going to be nice and pro-rate the charge for the pillow-top; only $275, plus tax and shipping. I recounted to them why I originally bought this bed, that it was the last bed I was ever going to buy as stated by their sales person. So now I have to pay $275 every 3 years? I was quickly becoming disenfranchised. The Select Comfort operator asked me to hold on a moment, a typical used car salesman tactic. She came back and said she would do me a favor, this one time. They would replace the parts at no charge. Thank you very much; I look forward to this same argument in another three years. They replaced the pillow-top and foam, and all was *almost* well. The inches of padding (which they now say is worth almost 20% of the entire price of the bed – read below) was split down the middle, right along the crease of the two air bags. They replaced that without question. That told me that this was not a new request and not a problem isolated to my family. I replaced the pillow-top because there were holes near my feet and the foam was replaced because there was a horrendous hole in the middle of the bed. It was a chasm that you could not escape. You had to sleep with your back to the middle of the bed, lest you be sucked into the hole. That is why I replaced the pillow-top and the padding in the first place. Within months, the hole was back. No matter how much I worked, prodded and manipulated the bed, the air bags, the pads and the foam, the hole came back. I have not checked to see if the split has returned to the foam, I actually do not want to know. I will just deal with my fate at this point. I moved. During the move, I lost my wireless remote (one bed is wireless, one bed is wired). We looked everywhere, and after a week, I called Select Comfort for a replacement. How much is a remote you ask? $150. One hundred and fifty dollars. Are you kidding me? That was atrocious and I was enraged. They knew that I could not use my bed without that remote and they bent me over a barrel. I declined their rape request and luckily the remote turned up. So now red wine was spilled on a bed in the master bedroom and a non-warranty replacement was needed. I called Select Comfort directly and requested a new pillow-top. $810, plus tax and shipping. Eight hundred and ten dollars, plus whatever. This is an example of a retailer that sells you a ridiculously over-priced product, then soaks you whenever you need their help, knowing that you can ONLY go to them for help. Once you buy a Select Comfort bed, they have you. It is either deal with them, or cut your losses. And when you buy through Select Comfort, it will be a big loss. From someone who has two, very expensive Select Comfort 7000 series beds, I would recommend not buying one. Among the problems I have listed above, after time the air bags begin to slowly leak. You set it at 65 and two days later, you are at 35. I consider it a minor inconvenience; I just reset the number to the one I want. But in retrospect, spending that much cash on these beds, I would expect better. After all, the Select Comfort employee told me that this would be “the last bed I ever bought”. If they use that as a sales pitch think twice, and learn from my mistakes. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at: [] Regards, Rob

I have suffered with a Sleep Number bed for 6 years. Here are some of my problems. If I make the mistake of sleeping on my stomach, it gives me a horrible back ache. It slides around on the foundation. They told me to apply double sided tape The sheets and blankets refuse to stay tucked in. The air pump unit has failed to hold air and had to be replaced twice. The plastic foundation broke in half and had to be replaced. The 30 year warranty is a joke. You have to pay a heavily prorated amount. They refused to allow me to upgrade, unless I buy a whole new mattress. If anyone knows of a Class Action Law Suit, let me know. Sam []

My mother has owned a Select Comfort bed for over 12 years. She has not had any problems with it whatsoever. About 8 years ago when I divorced and my mother was out of town taking care of my grandmother I stayed at her house and slept in her bed for two years. It was the only bed I've ever slept in that I was able to sleep on my sides without pain in my shoulders. I've also had back problems and never had any back pain in this bed. My only complaint with this bed is that it was too warm. It's like your body heat heats up the air and it makes you hot. My mother's bed is the cheapest model that they sold at the time, I'm thinking that one of the new models with more padding between you and the air chambers might not have that problem. The only reason I don't own one is because I can't afford one but if I could I would definately buy one!

So many reviews seem over done, and not helpful. Here are my thoughts both good and bad, mostly good, after owning a 9000 bed for about 1 year. I initiated the search for a new bed, because I was having trouble sleeping on my side. I used to sleep with my arm up under my pillow, but I started having shoulder pain that would not allow me to do that anymore, and sleeping with my arm underneath me would cause my arm to fall asleep, and was just plain uncomfortable due to the firmness of our mattress. I had always heard that a firm mattress was better for your back. This is so wrong... At first I tried to solve the problem with a 4 inch memory foam topper, which was definitely an improvement, but I still wasn't getting a good night's sleep, and the topper made me too hot. So I started looking for a solution beyond your typical spring mattress. My parents own a tempurpedic deluxe. My Dad likes it almost as much as his old water bed, but my mom feels her side is worn out after only 3 years. I have a feeling it won't be long before they are looking for a new bed... I think their bed is pretty comfortable myself, but I shied away from tempurpedic due to the heat issue I was having with my topper, which brings me to select comfort and my experience. 1. The adjustability feature is great. My wife loved it while she was pregnant, because she could soften it up, and firm it up now that she's not. 2. It took me a couple of weeks to finally settle on a sleep number of 45. Any softer, and it felt great for my arms, and shoulders, but I would wake up with a slight back ache. Much firmer, and it was not much better than the old spring mattress topper combination. The bottum line being that it took some experimentation, and some bad nights on the bed before I found my preferred setting. 3. There is definitely a foam divider between the air bladders that you can feel, but it is not uncomfortable, so I do not find it significant on the 9000. Perhaps it is more pronounced on the lower models that have less padding on top. 4. I have not experienced the trenching phenomenon that seems to be frequently mentioned in other reviews. Perhaps if you tend to gravitate to the center of the bed, and sleep there compressing the foam this might be a problem for you. Personally being centered on the air bladder set to my liking is the most comfortable spot, so that's pretty much where I stay, and I do not feel like there is any sort of slope toward the middle. I think my wife's sleep number at the moment is 35, which is significantly softer than mine, but to date this has not been a problem. 5. It seemed to take the bed a couple of weeks to stabilize. I would go to sleep with a setting of 50, and the next night it would say 45 or something. At first I thought maybe it leaked a tiny bit or something, but maybe the air bladder stretches a little bit or something. At any rate I haven't touched the control in over 6 months now, and this doesn't appear to be a problem any more. 6. The price seemed a little steep at first, but if the bed actually lasts for 20 years it will be the best bed I've ever owned. No flipping, the ability to adjust to aging, or changing body weight, and I assume as long as the air isn't leaking the same level of support, and comfort as the day it was new. 7. The bed is light and easy to set up compared to dragging a king size spring mattress up the stairs. Though I think that if I ever move again I will hire movers anyway. In conclusion I would highly recommend this bed. I honestly can't fathom why anyone would not be able to find a setting that worked for them. There are probably some other really great beds out there, but for anyone who has a spouse that can't agree on which bed that is. A sleep number is definitely worth a closer look. It might also be worth mentioning that I did not like the 5000 anywhere near as much as the 9000, and feel the extra money was well spent.

Wife insisted we buy this bed based on comments from her brother and sister in law (they eventually sold their SC bed). We have had the queen for about 3 years now. It is very expensive for what you get, basically two air mattresses encased in a foam frame held together by the special cover. It is supported by a hard plastic base. Never had a problem with the pump, air leaks, or the controller. Never needed customer service. Can't say it is any better than the old spring mattress we had but I don't have any back problems either. I like the setting at 60. If you go low, you will feel the center sag like a hammock. I can also feel the center foam strip between the two air bags if I roll over. Their memory foam pillows are very uncomfortable. If you find a conventional mattress that you like, buy that one. If you like to change the bed firmness from time to time, this might be your bed.

My Sleep Number bed has been an absolutely wonderful. With chronic back pain I have to flip from my back to my sides from one night to the next. With the ability to adjust the firmness of the mattress I can get a peaceful nights rest in any position. I recommend a Sleep Number bed to anyone with a spine injury. When I was talking to both of my chiropractors both of them said not only do they recommend them for their patients, they personally own them.

After my husband and I saved up our pennies to purchase the 9000 model, I wish we had spent our money elsewhere. We were led to believe that purchasing the floor model to save some money would benefit us. It still had the 20 yr warranty with the catch that we could not return it. Well, after having to wait 3 weeks to pick up the bed, we brought it home, and after easy assembly, could not inflate the air chambers. Night #1 - could not sleep on the bed. After calling the store and speaking to the manager, it turns out that we had the wrong remote to the bed. So, with the correct remote, we inflated the air chambers and watched the right side deflate as quick as it inflated. Night #2 - slept on the floor. We were told that the pump was bad and that we would receive a new pump to maintain air pressure. New pump, still deflates. Night #3 - slept on the couch. New air chambers were ordered, but not overnighted...no one ever apologized for our inconvience...and we are still not sleeping in the bed. Pennies saved up, not well spent.

After owning a Sleep Comfort bed for a little over a year and loving it, I started waking up in the morning with pains in my arms like tennis elbow. I complained to the company, and they said I had the bed too firm. I lowered the firmness, but now, not only do my arms, sholders, and neck hurt, my back hurts because it is not being supported. I have tried a lot of different pillows, but they don't help. I am so disappointed and depressed about this bed because it was so expensive that I don't feel like I can afford to get rid of it. I feel like I'm a hundred years old when I get out of bed in the morning! My advice--don't buy it.

Recently, my husband and I stayed at a Radisson hotel which had a Kg sleep number bed in the room. I remebered seeing a commercial for it but wasn't too impressed because, frankly, we've tried so many different beds with marginal results in terms of comfort. When we retired, I thought "what the heck, let's see what the hype is all about". Following the simple instructions, I discovered the number at which I was most comfortable, and went to sleep...Nd stayed asleep on my back! Before the birth of my son (14yrs ago), I was a great back sleeper...never had any pain;always slept well. Since then, things have been different. I rarely sleep well at home and NEVER sleep well while traveling. I had four of the best nights sleep ever! I was able to once again sleep comfortably on my back and it was heaven. My husband didn't bother the first night but after that he also set his side. Apparently was quite high that first night and he found equal comfort by fussing at bit with the controls. Didn't notice any noise. Must have been muffled by the carpet and bedding. Bottom line is that I love this bed and am going to order one asap. I understand that htere is a discount for medical professionals so that may make it less strain on the budget. I only gave it 4 stars because I don't yet own one and I'm sure there will be something glitchy happening but I don't expect to be unhappy with it.
