I paid $20 to rent the machine and $52 for the chemicals. Heavy, not easy to maneuver, kept refilling and had streaks in the rug. I would be cheaper off buying a machine.

The Rug Doctor is very heavy, hard to move around and only allows backward movement. It takes hours to clean a small area, constantly needs water refills, leaves streaks in the carpet, because it only cleans one verticle space at a time. The only aspect of the Rug Doctor that was true is that it shows how much dirt is in a carpet. Other than that, I am very disappointed in the machine and I feel like the advertisement told a Big lie. I would not recommend the Rug Doctor to anyone. Definetly hyped and over advertised...Buyer Beware!

Rug Doctors all work by being pulled backwards and they are heavy. I read the directions. Not over wetting the carpet and going slowly for the vacuum to pick up moisture is important. I think this is a good product similar to the rental Rug Doctor units. You do have to refil the water more often but you don't have to go rent it and then do all your cleaning in a 24hr rental period. It is of course not as robust as the rental unit, it is smaller. Having a willing teenager to do the operation helps but is less necessary with this home unit.

Easy to get going, but have to go backwards, no forward motion. Left my rug soak and wet, had to put towels down and finally used my Hoover steam cleaner to pick up rest of water. Sent it back, took amonth to get another one, it did exactly the same thing, plus there is only enough water in the tank to do a small runner, you have to keep refilling the tank. Again I had to use my old steam rug cleaner to pick up excess water. So I sent that back and said NO MORE RUG DOCTORS, I could not believe that a month and a half later they sent me another one!! that one was not even taken out of the box, but the hassel of sending these back. This is probably one of the worst and most expensive products I have ever ordered off of an informercial
